The Importance of a Balanced Diet


It is a common misconception that as long as you do not eat above your daily calorie needs that you will lose weight and be healthy. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The importance lies as much in what you eat as it does in how much of it you eat. 200 calories of grilled chicken and 200 calories worth of cookies are two completely different things. A balanced diet will make sure that you are getting all of your vitamins and nutrients. (Keep in mind, this type of balanced diet will not work for everyone. If you have any type of medical condition, food allergy or specific food diet you are following this will not apply to you. Always consult your doctor)
Using a tool like My Fitness Pal is a great way to take a look at what I call “The Big 5″:
  • Carbs
  • Sodium
  • Sugar
  • Protein
  • Fat
Sodium and sugar are two of the easiest ones to overlook. If you have not been tracking these two make sure that you start right away. A tool like MFP can give you a general guidelines of how many grams/milligrams you should be eating of each, but you should do the research to find the correct numbers for your lifestyle, age, weight etc…
